Driver Rafael Sperafico dies in tragic accident

In the Stock Car Light race this Sunday in Interlagos, the 26 year old driver Rafael Sperafico lost his life in a tragic accident. Rafael’s car ran straight off the CafĂ© curve, hit the tyre wall and spun back on track. At this time, Renato Russo crashed into the driver’s side.

Dr. Dino Altmann is the category’s chief doctor, and spoke about the rescue efforts right after the accident: “You’ve seen all the images. Unfortunately, he was exposed in the worst possible way; the static car with his side turned to the drivers coming in from the straight. Renato Russo could not avoid him and smashed into the side of Rafael’s car. The T crash is always what we fear the most. He suffered massive head injuries followed by cardiac-respiratory failure, and despite all our efforts, we were not successful in reanimating him. Unfortunately, he is now at the medical centre awaiting the legal procedures that must be taken”.

“We arrived at the scene of the accident swiftly. There is always an attempt at resuscitation, but we were not successful at any point of this process”, declared Dino Altmann.

40 year old Renato Russo also suffered head injuries, but was conscious and transferred in stable conditions to SĂŁo Luiz Hospital. According to Altmann, a series of exams will finalize the diagnostics. “His vital signs are all stable. He will be further reevaluated at the hospital with complimentary exams. Then, we will have a final position on any lesions he may have suffered. However, for the moment, his conditions are absolutely stable”.

The Stock Car family deeply regrets this loss and extends their unconditional support to the driver’s family and friends.
