Interview: Ex-F1 driver talks about his debut in the Stock Car category
Antonio Pizzonia started his career in 1991 with karting, where he remained until 1996. In 1999, he won the Formula Renault UK title and the vice-championship in the European Formula Renault. After taking the British Formula 3 title in 2000, Pizzonia ran four races for Williams in Formula 1. Back in his native country, “Jungle Boy”, as he is known in Europe, now makes his debut in Nextel Cup Stock Car for Win Motorsport (Volkswagen).
How did you get to the Stock Car category?
It was surprising and unexpected, at least for the 2007 season. I always wanted to compete in Brazil, my home country, but it was definitely not in my plans to enter mid season. When I was invited, I just couldn’t refuse.
How did the first tests in Campo Grande work out?
It was very good. Obviously, everything is very different from what I’m used to. It was more of an adaptation so I could get used to the car, so it was productive in that sense, even though I have a long way to go.
What about the adaptation to a touring car?
It’s slow due to all the differences. I don’t have any experience in the touring car category and know almost no tracks in Brazil. It’s a challenge, but I’m ready for it.
What are your hopes for the debut race on Sunday in Londrina?
Definitely qualify, and if I can win points, it would be a big bonus.
You’ve been successful in many categories in your career. Do you believe you will give the Nextel Cup drivers a run for their money?
That is always my intention, in any racing category. Jumping in mid season makes that harder, so I’m not expecting any immediate results yet.
What can your fans expect from “Jungle Boy” on the tracks?
It’s difficult to expect anything right now. If people have a little patience, I can get used to everything and start doing well soon.
